It sure is an odd looking plant. I haven't a clue what it could be.

Hi Curtis! Thanks for weighing in. Hopefully someone will stop by who can solve this mystery for us....

Cool! It looks like it might be some type of Marah?

Thanks, Tina! I'll check that out.

no idea, but intriguing.

Hi Muum! Thanks for stopping by. Hopefully Tina has solved the mystery for us....

It is a Baloon Plant AKA asllepias physocarpa. Very cool. Thanks for posting the pic. I have never seen this one before. I looked and you can get seeds online.

Another cool plant that makes growths something like this is the 'love-in-a-puff' AKA 'Balloon Vine', AKA 'heart-seed vine' AKA Cardiospermum halicacabum. It is a climbing tendril type vine that makes air filled seed pods like this only smaller and inside are three black pea sized seeds with little perfect bright white hearts on them (the seeds are green until the pod ripens and dries). Very cool plant for kids and hanging baskets and will also climb a metal trellis. Sort of like living bubble wrap after it grows the pods. Kids find the dried pods with the little hard seeds very fascinating and so do I. You really have to see the seed to believe that some person didn't put the little heart on it. If you email me, I can mail a couple seeds to you..I only have a few right now but hope to have a big harvest from the one I have growing.

When planting, take fine sand paper and sand down the hard black seed coat on half of the seeds till just a bit of white shows. They will germinate both ways but sanding can make them germinate faster (I think). It grows very easy and not one to let loose in your garden as it can become a weed.

It may be gomphocarpus physocarpus. See it in
